NASPEM's biennial conference aims to foster excellence in pediatric exercise research and serves as a catalyst for the promotion of exercise science, physical activity and fitness in the health and medical care of children and adolescents. Our 2020 meeting is being held in the spectacular SilverStar Mountain Resort in beautiful British Columbia, Canada. The nearby cities of Kelowna and Vernon are amongst the most liveable cities in Canada, being in the heart of the Okanagan valley, famous for its views, its fruit orchards and above all its wineries. Accommodation is onsite, which, together with the social activities being organized, will enable focused interaction and discussion and encourage the exchange of ideas and collaboration between established and young researchers.
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child has just celebrated its 30th anniversary and we would like to invite clinicians, researchers and trainees who come to NASPEM 2020 to consider the child's right to be fit. This includes (but is by no means limited to) how we ensure a safe and conducive environment for every child to be active, consideration of the ability and disability of every child and the development of appropriate assessment. To this end, we have some of the leading experts in our field joining us and are thrilled to have Professors Dan Cooper, Neil Armstrong and Mark Tremblay opening the conference with the Dr. Tom Rowland series, and Professor David Dunstan presenting the Oded Bar-Or Memorial Lecture. We are very excited to continue our American Academy of Pediatrics Exchange Lecture and offer additional keynote lectures, covering a range of topics within pediatric exercise medicine, including Pediatric Sleep, Cardiac Adaptations and Screening in Young Athletes, Physical Activity and Disability and reconsideration of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as it pertains to physical fitness. This Convention creates the international legal framework for the protection and promotion of the rights and freedoms of the child, currently stating the rights of the child to engage in recreational activities and the provision of appropriate opportunities. We continue with The Year that Was, a fun, informative session presented by our organization's flagship journal, Pediatric Exercise Science, and Five in Five -- short presentations from previous winners of NASPEM's Marco Cabrera Student Research Award. Add on the free communications and you will see that we have a fantastic scientific agenda.

MARCH 10, 2020: COVID-19
Dear Friends and Colleagues:
As you are all aware, things continue to evolve rapidly regarding COVID-19. A point of concern for all organizations such as ours is the fate of conferences in light of growing travel and work restrictions. We wanted everyone to be aware that have met and will continue to meet on a regular basis to try to stay on top of this situation. As Presidents, we will advise the Board and membership of our deliberations, including dates for final decisions regarding the conference. For now, the conference will proceed and we encourage everyone to submit Abstracts according to the timelines currently posted here. We are also committed however to ensuring any final decisions around the conference will be made prior to a time when people will have booked travel. We are acutely aware of the need to ensure there is no personal loss of income. The tricky balancing point is that we also need to have a sense of who will be attending for planning and organization. Therefore, please submit your Abstract(s) soon and hopefully, we will be unaffected by all this and see each other in beautiful British Columbia as planned.
